Eating disorders and type 1 diabetes

Chronic physical disorder inevitably affects many important areas of functioning in a developing person and as such represents a risk factor for the development of comorbid mental disorders. The present article describes one of the more common chronic physical disorders of childhood and adolescence, type 1 diabetes (T1D), and its influence on the development of eating disorders in adolescent females. It delineates the main characteristics of T1D and its contemporary treatment as well as phenomenology, etiology and epidemiology of comorbid disordered eating behavior and eating disorders and the main principles of management of adolescent females with these comorbidities.
