Abstract

This study investigated the effects of note-taking methods — longhand versus computer typing
— on recall among high school students. Building on Mueller and Oppenheimer’s findings and the
psychological theory of Levels of Processing, the study hypothesized that handwritten notes would
lead to better recall due to more engaged cognitive processing. Twenty international school students
aged 16–17 were divided into two groups: one using paper and the other using computers to take
notes on 17 presented facts. After a 10-minute delay involving an interference task, participants
wrote down as many facts as they could recall. Results showed that the paper group significantly
outperformed the computer group, with a mean recall of 7.4 versus 4.4 facts respectively. A Mann-
Whitney U test confirmed statistical significance (U = 23, p < 0.05), allowing the rejection of the
null hypothesis. The findings support the theory that handwriting fosters deeper processing through
summarization and paraphrasing, while typing encourages verbatim transcription and shallower encoding.
Strengths of the study include ecological validity, control of extraneous variables, and standardized
procedures. However, limitations such as a small sample size, potential researcher bias,
and variability in individual cognitive styles affect generalizability. Future studies should consider
larger samples, extended exposure times, and analysis of the note content. Despite limitations, results
suggest that traditional handwritten note-taking may enhance learning and memory retention
more effectively than computer-based methods, challenging the growing reliance on digital tools
in education.
