Abstract

Psychogenic polydipsia is a clinical syndrome characterized by increased thirst with increased fluid
intake, resulting in polyuria and hypoosmolality of urine. Psychogenic polydipsia is often associated
with most severe psychiatric diseases which lead to institutonalization such as schizophrenia and
bipolar mood disorder. The exact etiology of the disease is unknown. This paper will present a summary
of the professional literature on the topic with a case description of a 52-year-old patient who has
been residing in the special social welfare institution Dom na Krasu since 2003 and has, in addition
to schizophrenia, secundary epilepsy after the removal of pyelocytic astrocytoma and been diagnosed
with psychogenic polydipsia and hyponatremia.
